Cloudy Summer Skies

The night that dries my tears
on the soft shoulder of your dress
quietly drifts into morning.
The night held you close to me
as the music dissipated to the stars
and I could hear no one but you
through the noise.
Your dress was black velvet
and the night sky danced in your eyes.
The smile that passed your lips
drove eternity through my mind
like a sunrise
as the sun first peeks over the mountains
or like the black, storm clouds
that break just enough for a shaft of light
to steam through.
The night chiseled your touch
and looks into my imagination
so you will always be with me
though you aren’t near me.
A flash of lightening
lights up these long, yellow fields of grass
on this lonely bus trip away from you.
