Certainty

The night fell relentlessly
and I let it come.
Black surrounded life—
alone at last.
The mist of sleep
steady,
flowing,
dragged me under its ocean
of dreams
and hope—
finally alone.
I took your hand
and we walked in the moonlight
through this fog of transparent
reality.
Maybe some waves,
maybe sand,
but definitely you
and your soft,
pained eyes—
we were alone.
If only I could
hold you close,
feel your heart pounding,
caress your cheek
with a tender hand,
speak my heart,
touch your soul.
If only I could live in my dreams.

The blaring warning
that morning arrives
blows you and the fog
and the memory
on a stiff, cold wind
over a heaving ocean—
Please don’t leave me alone.
